For Parts Vehicles — Second-Hand Buying Guide

A For Parts listing is priced for what can be recovered from it rather than for use, so vehicles at this grade are worth roughly 25% of top price — $7 to $10,106 (about £5 to £7,500). Not running, not road legal, or worth more broken than whole. Sold to be dismantled or rebuilt, never to be driven away as it stands.

Where the line falls

Vehicles are the one category where the paperwork can be worth more than the metal: service history, documents and a clean title decide the price before anybody looks at the bodywork.

For comparison, one grade up is Fair Vehicles.

What the price reflects at this grade

  • Motor Scooter — Worn drive belts and rollers, a routine but essential service
  • Motorbike — Missing service history, which buyers discount heavily
  • Motorhome — Damp in walls, floor or ceiling
  • Quad Bike — Bent frames and cracked welds from rollovers
  • Roof Box — Cracked shells, which cannot be reliably repaired
  • Tow Bar — Missing brackets, which are vehicle-specific
  • Trailer — Failed lights and perished wiring
  • Van — High mileage without supporting service history
  • Alloy Wheels — Heavy kerb damage on the lips

Listing at the For Parts grade

State whether it has a valid title and whether it can be driven onto a trailer. Collection logistics decide these sales as much as the price.

Shots that carry the most weight in vehicles:

  • Van — The whole van from a front and a rear three-quarter angle
  • Alloy Wheels — The back of one wheel showing the size, offset and PCD markings
  • Boat — The interior, cockpit and helm
  • Car — The full interior including the driver’s seat and the dashboard with the mileage showing

On a typical $5,056 listing, a marketplace charging 20% takes $1,011, one charging 13.6% takes $688 and one charging 10% takes $506. WishThrift charges neither side, so you keep the whole $5,056. Listing is free.
