Sell Your Tool Set in the US

Used tool sets in the US typically sell for $27 to $200. Hand tools barely wear out, so a complete set from a decent maker holds value for decades.

Guide ranges converted from sterling at the 2 August 2026 rate, not quotes — sellers set their own price. Grades are seller-declared; WishThrift does not inspect or verify them.

What lifts the price

  • Complete sets with every piece present
  • Chrome vanadium and hardened steel construction

What pulls it down

  • Rounded sockets and worn spanner jaws
  • Cheap unbranded sets, which sell for very little

Selling a tool set in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Lay the set out in its case and check for gaps
  • Photograph the full set in the open case

Getting it ready

  • Check for rust, rounded sockets and worn screwdriver tips.
  • Note the drive sizes, the number of pieces claimed, and how many are actually present.

Photograph

  • Any empty slots, clearly visible
  • A close view of socket and spanner markings

Put in the description

  • Metric, imperial or both
  • Condition of the tools and the case, and any rust or rounding

Brand, piece count and type: “Halfords Advanced 200 Piece Tool Set, Complete in Case”. Piece count is the main search term. Say honestly whether it is complete — “complete” or “missing 4 pieces, listed below” both work far better than silence.

Steady all year with a spring lift. Trade brands hold value well; unbranded sets sell cheaply but reliably.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $202 a buyer pays is the $202 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for tool sets.

Common questions

Where can I sell a tool set in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is it complete?

Lay it out in the case and count. Photographs of a full case sell sets; vague claims of completeness invite lowball offers.

Does a missing socket matter?

More than sellers expect. Buyers count the pieces against the case moulding, so state clearly what is missing.

Is surface rust a problem?

Light rust cleans off easily and does not affect function. Deep pitting does, and should be photographed.
