What lifts the price

  • Genuine vintage with period construction
  • Heavyweight loopback cotton

What pulls it down

  • Cracked or peeling printed graphics
  • Thin unbranded sweatshirts

Selling a sweatshirt in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Check the neck label for brand and era
  • Photograph any print close up

Getting it ready

  • Look at any print for cracking, and check the inside for pilling on the fleece.
  • Read the composition, since heavyweight cotton sweatshirts sell for far more than thin poly blends.

Photograph

  • The print or logo close up
  • The neck tag with brand and size

Put in the description

  • Print condition, including cracking or peeling
  • Crew neck, quarter zip or hooded, and ribbing condition

Brand, weight and size: “Champion Reverse Weave Sweatshirt, Heavyweight, Size L”. Fabric weight is a real differentiator and rarely mentioned. Say crew neck or quarter zip, since those are separate searches.

Sells all year with a clear lift from September and a second one in the new year. Recognised brands and vintage prints move within days; plain unbranded sweatshirts sit for weeks and are usually better bundled with other basics than listed on their own.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $54 a buyer pays is the $54 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for sweatshirts.

Common questions

Where can I sell a sweatshirt in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is the print cracked?

Photograph it close up. Print condition is what separates a good price from a poor one on branded sweatshirts.

What is loopback cotton?

A heavier knit construction with visible loops inside. It wears far better than thin brushed fleece and buyers look for it.

Does cracked print matter?

On modern items yes. On genuine vintage, some cracking is expected and does not put collectors off.
