Selling a suit in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

Pinch the lapel to feel whether there is a floating canvas layer
Measure the chest, shoulder and inseam rather than trusting the label

Getting it ready

Check whether the trousers have been taken up or let out, and whether there is turn-up allowance left.
Inspect the lining, the crotch seam and the seat, and have it dry-cleaned if it looks tired.

Fabric, colour and both sizes: “Wool Two Piece Suit, Charcoal, Jacket 40R Trousers W34 L31”. Give both sizes in the title, because a suit that fits the chest but not the leg is no use. Say two-piece or three-piece explicitly.

Lifts around wedding season in spring and summer, interview periods in autumn, and before Christmas. Classic colours sell steadily; fashion cuts date quickly.

Does moth damage make a suit unsellable?

Small holes lower the price but do not prevent a sale if disclosed. Check carefully, since buyers will.
