Sell Your Suit in India

Used suits in India typically sell for ₹3,850 to ₹19,000 (about $40 to $200). Suits sell on the jacket and trouser measurements together, and the fastest way to lose the sale is not saying whether the trousers have been altered.

What lifts the price

  • Canvassed rather than fused construction
  • Matching trousers with unworn seat and hems

What pulls it down

  • Moth damage, common on stored wool
  • Very dated cuts and lapel widths

Selling a suit in India

UPI has largely replaced cash for in-person handovers and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. Cash on delivery is still widely expected for anything posted, and it is worth deciding your position on it before you list.

India Post, Delhivery and DTDC all offer nationwide coverage, and courier cost varies sharply between metros and smaller towns.

Demand climbs ahead of the festival season and again in the run-up to wedding season, when clothing, jewellery and home items all move faster.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Hold it to the light to check for moth holes
  • Measure the chest, shoulder and inseam rather than trusting the label

Getting it ready

  • Measure the jacket shoulders, chest and length, and the trouser waist, inside leg and rise.
  • Check whether the trousers have been taken up or let out, and whether there is turn-up allowance left.

  • The inner jacket label with composition and size
  • The lining, plus any shine, pull or stain

Put in the description

  • Jacket shoulders, chest, sleeve and length
  • Trouser waist, inside leg and rise, and whether hemmed or with turn-up allowance

Post in a garment bag or fold carefully with tissue. Suits arrive looking cheap if crushed, and that undermines the price you agreed.

Lifts around wedding season in spring and summer, interview periods in autumn, and before Christmas. Classic colours sell steadily; fashion cuts date quickly.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the ₹19,250 a buyer pays is the ₹19,250 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in India

India is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of India with their own page for suits.

Common questions

Where can I sell a suit in India?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. UPI has largely replaced cash for in-person handovers and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. Cash on delivery is still widely expected for anything posted, and it is worth deciding your position on it before you list.

Is it wool?

Read the composition label. Wool suits sell for several times polyester ones and buyers check at handover.

Are used suits worth much?

Well-made canvassed suits from good cloth sell reasonably. Fused high-street suits sell for very little, whatever they cost new.

What is the difference between canvassed and fused?

A canvassed suit has a floating layer that moulds to the wearer; a fused one is glued and can bubble with age. Pinch the lapel to tell them apart.
