Sell Your Suit in Canada

Used suits in Canada typically sell for C$57 to C$285 (about $40 to $200). Suits sell modestly unless the cloth and construction are genuinely good, which most buyers can assess from a few details.

What lifts the price

  • Recognised cloth mills named on the label
  • Generous inlay allowing future alteration

What pulls it down

  • Fused construction that has bubbled at the lapel
  • Shine on the seat and elbows from wear

Selling a suit in Canada

Interac e-Transfer is the norm and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. It is what most buyers will suggest before anything else.

Canada Post, Purolator and UPS cover the country, but rates change sharply between provinces and remote postcodes carry surcharges.

Shipping cost is the single commonest reason a Canadian listing stalls. Decide collection versus courier before you price it, and say which you are offering.

Two practical things shape a Canadian sale. Interprovincial shipping costs can exceed the value of a mid-priced item, which is why so much trade here is collection-only. And winter genuinely interrupts handovers in much of the country, so agree a window rather than a fixed day between December and March.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Pinch the lapel to feel whether there is a floating canvas layer
  • Hold it to the light to check for moth holes

Getting it ready

  • Measure the jacket shoulders, chest and length, and the trouser waist, inside leg and rise.
  • Inspect the lining, the crotch seam and the seat, and have it dry-cleaned if it looks tired.

Photograph

  • Jacket and trousers laid out together, front
  • The inner jacket label with composition and size
  • The lining, plus any shine, pull or stain

Put in the description

  • Trouser waist, inside leg and rise, and whether hemmed or with turn-up allowance
  • Fabric composition and whether it is two or three piece
  • Lining condition, and any alterations already made

Fabric, colour and both sizes: “Wool Two Piece Suit, Charcoal, Jacket 40R Trousers W34 L31”. Give both sizes in the title, because a suit that fits the chest but not the leg is no use. Say two-piece or three-piece explicitly.

Post in a garment bag or fold carefully with tissue. Suits arrive looking cheap if crushed, and that undermines the price you agreed.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the C$283 a buyer pays is the C$283 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in Canada

Canada is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of Canada with their own page for suits.

Common questions

Where can I sell a suit in Canada?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Interac e-Transfer is the norm and is instant and traceable, which suits a private sale well. It is what most buyers will suggest before anything else.

Is the waistcoat included?

Say two-piece or three-piece plainly. A three-piece is worth meaningfully more and buyers search for it specifically.

Are used suits worth much?

Well-made canvassed suits from good cloth sell reasonably. Fused high-street suits sell for very little, whatever they cost new.

Does moth damage make a suit unsellable?

Small holes lower the price but do not prevent a sale if disclosed. Check carefully, since buyers will.
