Sell Your Saree in the US

Used sarees in the US typically sell for $20 to $200. Sarees range from everyday cotton to heavily worked silk, and the fabric and weave do almost all of the pricing.

What lifts the price

  • Pure silk and recognised regional weaves
  • Blouse piece still attached and unstitched

What pulls it down

  • Fold lines that have weakened into splits
  • Missing blouse piece

Selling a saree in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Check the fabric label or do a burn test on a loose thread if you know how
  • Photograph the pallu and border detail clearly

Getting it ready

  • Check whether the blouse piece is attached or included, since that materially affects the value.
  • Inspect the pallu and the zari work for pulls, tarnishing or loose threads, and check for any staining along the pleats.

Photograph

  • The border and zari work close up, showing the detail
  • The blouse piece, if included, laid flat

Put in the description

  • Length of the saree and whether a blouse piece is included
  • Condition of the pallu, border and zari, described honestly

Fabric, work and colour: “Pure Kanjivaram Silk Saree with Zari Border, Maroon, Blouse Piece Included”. Region and weave names are exactly what buyers search. Say whether the blouse piece is included in the title — it is one of the first things asked and it changes the price.

Rises sharply around Diwali, wedding season and other festivals. Silk and occasion pieces hold value well all year; everyday cotton sarees sell more slowly.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $202 a buyer pays is the $202 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for sarees.

Common questions

Where can I sell a saree in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is it pure silk?

Say what you know from the purchase or the label. Pure and art silk differ greatly in price, so never guess — describe the fabric and let the buyer assess.

Does a missing blouse piece reduce the price?

Yes, noticeably, because the buyer has to source matching fabric. Say clearly whether it is attached.

How should sarees be stored before selling?

Folded differently from time to time and kept out of direct light. Permanent fold lines weaken silk and eventually split it.
