Sell Your Kayak in the US

Used kayaks in the US typically sell for $160 to $810. Kayaks are bulky and sell locally, and hull condition is the whole safety question buyers are assessing.

What lifts the price

  • Hulls free of cracks, gouges and repairs below the waterline
  • Recognised makers with a following

What pulls it down

  • UV damage showing as chalky, brittle plastic
  • Warping from being stored badly on one side

Selling a kayak in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

Two practical things shape a US sale. Shipping is priced by dimensional weight as well as actual weight, so a light bulky item can cost far more to send than a heavy small one — measure the box before you quote. And meeting in person is common enough that many police departments now run designated safe-exchange areas in their car parks.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Run your hand over the whole hull feeling for repairs
  • Confirm all hatches, bungs and the seat are present

Getting it ready

  • Check the hull for deep gouges, repairs or soft spots, and test any hatches and bungs for seal.
  • Confirm which accessories are included: paddle, seat, buoyancy aid, spray deck.

  • The hull underside, showing scratches and any repair
  • The cockpit or seating area

Put in the description

  • Hull condition including gouges, repairs and soft spots
  • Accessories included: paddle, seat, pump, buoyancy aid

Type, length and contents: “Sit-On-Top Kayak, 10ft, with Paddle and Seat”. Length in feet is the primary filter because it determines transport. Say whether it is a single or tandem, and whether an inflatable comes with its pump.

April through August, peaking early summer. A kayak listed in autumn sells slowly and cheaply.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $808 a buyer pays is the $808 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for kayaks.

Common questions

Where can I sell a kayak in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

How heavy is it?

Give the weight. Buyers are working out whether they can lift it onto a roof alone, and it is the practical constraint.

Does storage affect a kayak’s value?

Considerably. A kayak stored flat on one side for years warps permanently, which affects how it handles.

Should I include the paddle?

Bundling paddle, spraydeck and buoyancy aid makes a listing much more attractive to a beginner buyer, who needs all of it anyway.
