Sell Your Engagement Ring in Australia

Used engagement rings in Australia typically sell for A$190 to A$2,300 (about $135 to $1,600). Selling an engagement ring is mostly about evidence: a buyer paying several hundred pounds wants certification, hallmarks and clear photographs, and will discount heavily without them.

What lifts the price

  • Larger, well-cut stones with good colour and clarity
  • A setting in current style that needs no rework

What pulls it down

  • No certificate, which makes buyers cautious about the stone
  • Worn claws that need rebuilding before the stone is safe

Selling an engagement ring in Australia

Bank transfer via PayID is instant and is what most private buyers will offer. Cash on collection remains common for larger items.

Australia’s second-hand market is strongly local and strongly seasonal, with most activity concentrated in the eastern capitals and buyers who expect to collect.

Australia Post covers everywhere, but distance pricing is real and interstate parcels cost meaningfully more than local ones.

Australia is a pre-launch market, so it is worth saying what a seller here should expect when it does open. Distance dominates everything: interstate parcels cost several times a metro delivery, and bulky items effectively only sell within a city. Most trade concentrates in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and buyers in those cities expect to collect rather than wait. Seasons run opposite to the northern hemisphere, so listings that follow UK or US timing arrive exactly half a year out of step — warm weather items want September, not March, and winter gear moves from around May.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Find any certificate and note the stone’s carat, cut, colour and clarity
  • Compare sold listings for a similar stone and setting rather than the retail price

Getting it ready

  • Photograph the hallmark and weigh the ring, and note the ring size.
  • Clean it gently, and examine the claws with a loupe or phone macro to check no stone is loose.

Photograph

  • The ring straight on, on a plain neutral background in daylight
  • The hallmark inside the band, legible
  • The certificate if you have one, and the claws and setting close up

Put in the description

  • Metal and carat from the hallmark, and total ring weight
  • Centre stone type, carat weight, and whether it is natural, lab-grown or a simulant
  • Whether a certificate or valuation is included, and from whom

Metal, stone and carat weight: “18ct White Gold Solitaire Engagement Ring, 0.5ct Diamond, Certificated”. The word certificated does a great deal of work if it is true. State the ring size, and if the stone is moissanite, lab-grown or cubic zirconia, say so in the title — not doing so is the fastest way to lose a sale at inspection.

A slower, more considered sale than most jewellery, often several weeks. Certificated rings sell markedly faster. There is a modest lift before Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the A$2,300 a buyer pays is the A$2,300 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell an engagement ring in Australia?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Bank transfer via PayID is instant and is what most private buyers will offer. Cash on collection remains common for larger items.

Is there a certificate?

Say yes or no plainly and photograph it if you have one. Certification is the single biggest price factor on a diamond ring.

Do I need a certificate to sell an engagement ring?

Not strictly, but it makes a real difference. Without one buyers cannot verify the stone and price defensively.

Is it better to sell the ring or the stone?

Usually the ring as it is. Removing the stone costs money and loses whatever the setting and maker contribute.
