Sell Your Electric Bike in the UK

Used electric bikes in the UK typically sell for £250 to £1,200 (about $335 to $1,600). On an electric bike nothing matters as much as the battery: its age, its capacity and its remaining range decide most of the price, and a vague answer costs you hundreds.

  • A recognised motor system with parts and servicing available

What pulls it down

  • Generic or discontinued motor systems with no parts support
  • Water ingress around the controller or display

Selling an electric bike in the UK

Most private sales settle by bank transfer or cash on collection. Faster Payments clear in seconds, which makes a transfer as safe as cash for the seller — wait for it to land before the item leaves your hands.

Royal Mail, Evri and InPost cover the whole country, and InPost lockers mean neither side has to be in for a delivery. Tracked 48 is the usual default for small parcels.

Two practical things shape a UK sale. Bank holidays and the run-up to Christmas slow collections right down, so build a few extra days in. And postage from mainland Britain to Northern Ireland, the Highlands and the islands carries surcharges that catch sellers out — quote for the buyer’s actual postcode rather than a flat rate.

Second-hand demand peaks in January, in the weeks before Christmas, and at the start of the academic year in September.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Charge fully and ride a known route to measure real range
  • Note the motor system, battery capacity in watt-hours, and the mileage

Getting it ready

  • Charge the battery fully and note how long a real ride lasts. State the range honestly rather than repeating the manufacturer’s claim.
  • Test every assist level, the display, the lights and the brakes, and check whether a spare key for the battery lock exists.

  • The display powered on, showing charge and assist level
  • The motor, and the drivetrain and brakes

Put in the description

  • Motor brand, power in watts, and whether it is mid-drive or hub-mounted
  • Battery capacity in watt-hours, its age, and realistic range from a real ride
  • Number of charge cycles if the display reports it

Motor position, battery capacity and brand: “Cube Kathmandu Hybrid, Bosch Mid-Drive, 500Wh Battery”. Mid-drive motors are worth substantially more than hub motors and buyers search for them specifically. Put the watt-hour figure in the title — it is the closest thing to a range specification buyers trust.

Almost always collected, and the buyer should ride it. If you must post, the battery is classed as dangerous goods by most couriers and often cannot be sent at all — check before you promise anything.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the £1,200 a buyer pays is the £1,200 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the UK

The United Kingdom is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United Kingdom with their own page for electric bikes.

Common questions

Where can I sell an electric bike in the UK?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Most private sales settle by bank transfer or cash on collection. Faster Payments clear in seconds, which makes a transfer as safe as cash for the seller — wait for it to land before the item leaves your hands.

Is the charger included?

Confirm it, and confirm you have the battery key. Proprietary chargers and keys are awkward and expensive to replace.

What is a used electric bike worth?

Battery condition drives it more than anything else. A bike with a healthy battery from a supported system sells strongly; a degraded battery can halve the value.

Is an e-bike with a dead battery worth selling?

Yes, but price it as a bike needing an expensive part and say so plainly. Some buyers will take that on.
