- Identify the line, character and year
- Check whether the outfit is original to the doll
Getting it ready
- Look for markings on the back of the neck, the head or between the shoulders. This is where the maker and often the year are stamped.
- Clean the face gently with a barely damp cloth. Never use solvent, and never attempt to restyle rooted hair with heat.

Put in the description
- Maker and line, with the marking you read it from
- Height in centimetres, and material — vinyl, porcelain, composition or cloth
- Whether original clothing, shoes, stand, box or certificate are included
Maker, line and era beat description every time: “Vintage Pedigree Sindy Doll, 1970s, Original Outfit” or “Barbie 1990s Bundle, 5 Dolls”. Collectors search the maker’s name, so if there is a mark on the neck, that word belongs in the title even if you do not recognise it.
Post with the head and limbs supported — wrap the head separately in tissue, because a vinyl face presses and marks against a hard box edge. Porcelain should be double boxed or collected.
