  • Chewed board book corners
  • Incomplete series with gaps

Selling childrens books in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Sort by reading age and photograph the bundle
  • Identify any first editions separately

Getting it ready

  • Check every book for drawing, torn pages and missing flaps or wheels on interactive books.
  • Discard anything mouldy or badly damaged rather than padding the bundle with it.

Photograph

  • Any complete series grouped together
  • A representative interior page

Put in the description

  • Format — board, picture or chapter books
  • Honest condition, including any drawing, tears or missing parts

Age range, series and quantity: “15 Julia Donaldson Picture Books, Age 2-5” or “[Series] Complete Set, 10 Books, Age 7-9”. Age range and named authors are what parents search. Board books, picture books and chapter books are distinct markets, so say which.

Lifts before Christmas and at the start of school terms. Named authors and complete series sell within days; mixed bundles need to be priced attractively.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $16 a buyer pays is the $16 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for childrens books.

Common questions

Where can I sell childrens books in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Has anything been drawn in?

Check every book and say. A child’s scribble is completely normal and buyers accept it when told; discovering it across a whole bundle is what causes complaints.

Are any children’s books valuable?

First editions of enduring titles can be worth a great deal. Check before bundling anything that looks old.

Does damage matter in a bundle?

Less than for singles, but be honest. Crayon and torn pages should be mentioned so buyers know what they are getting.
