Sell Your Boots in the US

Used boots in the US typically sell for $27 to $120. Good boots are built to be resoled, which is why quality pairs hold value long after cheaper ones have been thrown away.

  • Goodyear-welted or stitched construction that can be resoled
  • Uppers with no cracking across the vamp

What pulls it down

  • Cracked leather across the flex point
  • Salt staining from winter wear

Selling boots in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Look at the sole edge for a welt stitch line
  • Check the heel block and sole thickness

Getting it ready

  • Look at the sole edge: a line of stitching around the welt means the boots are resoleable, which is a major selling point.
  • Check the heel wear, the sole tread and the insole, and photograph the size stamp inside or on the sole.

Photograph

  • The soles, showing tread, heel wear and whether there is a stitched welt
  • The size stamp, legible

Put in the description

  • Sole and heel wear, and whether they have been resoled before
  • Whether they are waterproof or steel toe capped, if relevant

Brand, style and size: “Dr. Martens 1460 Boots, UK 8, Black Leather”. If they are Goodyear welted, put that in the title — buyers who know footwear search for it and pay more. State the sizing system, and say whether they are leather or synthetic.

Autumn and winter are strongest, with a clear peak from September to December. Quality welted boots hold value all year; fashion boots follow the season closely.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $121 a buyer pays is the $121 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell boots in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Can they be resoled?

Look for stitching around the welt and answer. Resoleable boots are worth substantially more because the buyer is purchasing decades of use, not a season.

What is Goodyear welting?

A construction method that stitches the sole to the upper via a welt, allowing resoling. Look for a stitch line around the sole edge.

Do resoled boots sell for less?

Not much, provided the work was done well. A recent professional resole can actually raise the price, since it resets the wear.
