What lifts the price

  • Signed and numbered limited editions
  • Original gallery labels and certificates

What pulls it down

  • Sun fading, which is irreversible
  • Foxing and damp staining on paper

Selling art prints in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Look for a pencil signature and edition number in the margin
  • Photograph any gallery label on the reverse

Getting it ready

  • Check for a pencil signature and an edition number in the margin, and note whether the signature is in the plate rather than added by hand.
  • Check the margins and the reverse for foxing, tape residue, trimming or light staining.

Photograph

  • The pencil signature and edition number, close and legible
  • A magnified area of the image showing the print texture

Put in the description

  • Sheet and image dimensions, and whether it is framed or mounted
  • Whether the signature is hand-applied in pencil or printed in the plate

Artist, title, process and edition: “Signed Lithograph, [Artist], Edition 24/150, 1978”. Say screenprint, lithograph, etching or giclée reproduction — the process is most of the value. Never use the word original for something printed in an edition of thousands.

Steady year round to a collector audience, with a lift in autumn. Named artists sell quickly when correctly identified; decorative prints compete on subject and framing.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $162 a buyer pays is the $162 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Common questions

Where can I sell art prints in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is it signed by hand?

Photograph the signature closely. A pencil signature in the margin is worth a great deal more than one printed in the image, and buyers know exactly how to tell them apart.

Does trimming a print reduce its value?

Considerably. The margins carry the signature and edition number, and a trimmed print loses most of its collectable value.

Why do prints fade?

Light exposure, particularly direct sun. Fading cannot be reversed, so check the colours against an unexposed edge.
