Sell Your Abaya in the US

Used abayas in the US typically sell for $20 to $120. Abayas are judged on fabric drape and finishing, and hand-worked detail is what separates the price brackets.

What lifts the price

  • Quality crepe and nida fabrics with good drape
  • Designer and boutique pieces

What pulls it down

  • Loose beading and shedding embellishment
  • Thin synthetic fabrics with poor drape

Selling an abaya in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

The US resale market is enormous and highly local — most transactions still happen between people within driving distance of each other, and buyers expect to collect rather than wait for a courier.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Hang it and check the drape falls cleanly
  • Measure the length from shoulder to hem

Getting it ready

  • Identify the fabric: nida, crepe, chiffon, linen or a blend.
  • Check the embroidery, any beading, the cuffs and the front closure.

Photograph

  • The fabric close up, showing texture and weight
  • Any embroidery or detailing

Put in the description

  • Open or closed style, and the closure type
  • Whether a matching hijab or belt is included

Fabric, style and length: “Nida Crepe Open Abaya, Black, 56 inch, Size 54”. Length in inches is the primary measurement buyers filter on. Say whether it is open or closed style, and whether a hijab or belt is included.

Steady year round with lifts around Ramadan and Eid. Quality fabrics sell fastest.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $121 a buyer pays is the $121 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for abayas.

Common questions

Where can I sell an abaya in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

How long is it?

Give the shoulder-to-hem measurement in inches. Abaya sizing is length-led and this is the number buyers use.

Does black fabric fade?

Yes, noticeably with repeated washing, and it shows badly in photographs. Check in natural light before listing.

Should I include the matching scarf?

If it came as a set, yes. Matching pieces are difficult to source separately.
