Sell Your Lawn Mower in the US

Used lawn mowers in the US typically sell for $54 to $335. Mower values hinge on engine or battery condition, and a machine that starts on the second pull sells far more easily than one that needs coaxing.

What lifts the price

  • Engines that start readily and run evenly
  • Sharp, undamaged blades and an intact deck

What pulls it down

  • Degraded batteries on cordless models
  • Missing grass box, which is model-specific

Selling a lawn mower in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

USPS, UPS and FedEx all cover the country. USPS Ground Advantage is normally cheapest for anything under a few pounds in weight; above that the gap narrows quickly.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Start it from cold and let it run for a few minutes
  • On cordless models, cut a full lawn and report the real runtime

Getting it ready

  • Clean the deck underneath thoroughly, sharpen or at least inspect the blade, and check the grass box for cracks.
  • On petrol machines, note the oil level and condition. Drain the fuel before handover or transport.

Photograph

  • The deck underside, showing the blade and any rust
  • The engine or motor housing with the model plate legible

Put in the description

  • For cordless, the battery voltage, how many are included and their honest health
  • That you have started and run it, plus any known fault

Type, cut width and power: “Petrol Self Propelled Lawn Mower, 46cm Cut, Briggs & Stratton” or “Cordless 40V Lawn Mower with 2 Batteries”. Cut width is the search, self-propelled is a genuine filter, and on cordless machines the battery count is most of the value.

March to August is the season, peaking in April and May. A working mower listed in spring often sells the same week; in October it will sit, so overwintering it is usually the better call.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $336 a buyer pays is the $336 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

The United States is a big place and what sells well moves with it. These are the parts of the United States with their own page for lawn mowers.

Common questions

Where can I sell a lawn mower in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Does it start easily?

Start it from cold and answer from that, not from memory. Almost every mower enquiry is really this question, and a confident specific answer closes it.

What should I do before selling a petrol mower?

Fresh fuel, a clean air filter and a sharp blade. All three are cheap and make the machine demonstrably better to a buyer.

Does a missing grass box matter?

Yes. Boxes are model-specific and often cost a meaningful share of the mower’s value.
