Sell Your Designer Bag in the US

Used designer bags in the US typically sell for $110 to $1,200. Designer bags hold value better than almost any other clothing item, but the range is wide because condition and completeness are scrutinised closely.

What lifts the price

  • Dust bag, authenticity card and receipt where you have them
  • Clean, unmarked interior lining

What pulls it down

  • Pen or make-up marks inside the lining
  • Handle darkening from skin oils

Selling a designer bag in the US

Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Distances are the real constraint. State plainly whether you will ship or collection only, because a buyer three states away will otherwise ask.

Demand rises through the spring cleaning season and again around college move-in in August, when furniture and small appliances move fastest.

Working out what yours is worth

  • Find the date or serial code inside the interior pocket
  • Compare sold listings for the same style, size and leather

Getting it ready

  • Photograph the date code, serial or heat stamp, and the hardware engraving, clearly enough to be read.
  • Clean the exterior gently, empty the pockets, and inspect the corners, handles and lining, which is where wear concentrates.

Photograph

  • The date code, serial number or heat stamp, in focus and legible
  • All four corners and the base, which is where genuine wear shows

Put in the description

  • Exactly what documentation is included: receipt, dust bag, card, box
  • Condition of corners, handles, hardware and lining, described honestly

Brand, model and material: “Michael Kors Selma Medium Saffiano Leather Satchel, Black”. The model name is how buyers search. Only use the brand name if you are certain of it. If you cannot confirm the bag is genuine, do not imply that it is — describe it factually and say what documentation you do and do not have.

Slower and more considered than other bags, often several weeks. Bags with full documentation sell markedly faster and for considerably more.

It costs nothing to list

There is no listing fee, no selling fee and no commission, so the $1,211 a buyer pays is the $1,211 you keep. You and the buyer settle up and arrange the handover between yourselves; WishThrift does not hold the money or ship the item.

Where in the US

Common questions

Where can I sell a designer bag in the US?

List it free on WishThrift and deal with the buyer direct. There is no selling fee, so the whole amount stays with you. Peer-to-peer payment apps dominate private sales, and buyers will usually offer one before they offer cash. Sales tax does not apply to a private sale between individuals.

Is it authentic?

Say exactly what you can evidence — where you bought it, what paperwork you hold — and nothing beyond that. WishThrift does not verify items, so never state authenticity as a fact you cannot support.

Does a missing dust bag or receipt matter?

It reduces what buyers will pay, because those items help them feel confident about what they are buying. It does not prevent a sale.

What condition issues matter most on a designer bag?

Corner wear first, then the interior lining and hardware. Photograph all of them clearly — buyers will ask if you do not.
